Athena Workstation at MIT, while based on 4.3BSD, is different in many ways
from 4.3BSD. For example, but the file system hierarchy has changed
substantially. The hier(7) man page, which is supposed to describe the file
system hierarchy, is of little practical use to the MIT Athena Workstation
user -- unless the user has a primarily historical interest. ;-)
I am presently responsible for bringing the man pages up to date.
Unfortunately, I do not presently have the prerequisite knowledge to rewrite
the hier(7) man page. To undertake the research necessary to gain
that knowledge would set the man page project back by a number of weeks and,
given the generally high level of expertise of many staff, is likely redundant.
I'm looking for a knowledgeable volunteer to draft a new hier(7) man page which
accurately reflects the Athena Workstation environment at MIT, and for
volunteers to review the draft before it is frozen. Candidates must be
familiar with the design decisions which led to the current filesystem
hierarchy. If you'd like to take on this project, or know of someone else who
would, please send me mail.
Be seeing you...
