ci fails with a segmention error if the user has logged out of the
system. in an X system that is bad practice, since i will frequently
log into a system just in order to get enough memory to work,
pop a window back onto the display i'm really using, and discard the
login window. in the process i've evidently caused myself to be removed
from the password file, which causes ci (and who knows what else) no
end of grief. can't this cleanup be done only on reboot.
