I'd like to add that I run sawfish with no panel or app-handler app
whatsoever. (This is not a deliberate choice; it's what I got after my
machine took the Athena release. If panel is launching, it isn't staying
alive long enough for me to see it.)
Anyway, sawfish keeps a list of invisible "iconified" windows, and you can
get to it (and restore those windows) by clicking anywhere on bare desktop
to get a menu ... the list is somewhere therein.
Unfortunately I'm on a non-X-capable terminal right at this moment and
can't remember the exact place to look, but it's there; I use it every day
when I "iconify" a window by mistake.
