What were you trying to do?
Trying to use the serial port for my UPS monitoring.
What's wrong:
Since I got my APC UPS 1400 several years ago, I've been
monitoring it using a program call powerchute which uses the serial
port. I hooked it up to my new SunBlade (with 18.1" LCD Flat Screen
Monitor) and it seemed to work OK until I rebooted the system. When
the system rebooted, it was unable to communicate with the screen.
The screen had a floating message saying to check the cable and
connections. After a lot of playing around, we discovered that when
disconnected the serial port, it would boot fine.
This seems consistent. Someone has guessed that the system is trying
to use the serial port as a console port when something is plugged
into it. That makes sense, but I can't see where that is controlled.
Do you know or is this some other type of problem?
