linux update looks for .i486 kernel rpms

On 486 machines, the update looks for a .i486 kernel rpm
(I seem to recall it did this last time we did a kernel update)
Presumably this is due to the algorithm used to derive what kernel
update to install. I don't think RedHat has ever issues an
i486 kernel rpm, so in general a symlink to the .i386 kernel
rpms would work....
