With the help of Laura (under my direction), I ordered a
cold reset of this color printer to reset the firmware back to factory specs. As stated above, appletalk has been
re-initialized. Dennis, I do believe that you will be all set. Please let us know if you are still having problems..
                         Thanks,

Hello hotline--

My documents are printing the header page and document page off the
left side of the paper. The originating Athena printer is called "
defoucauld". The destination printer is "nice". Can you please
assist me with fixing this problem?

Thanks much

Hi Lou, the printing is the same. If you tell me where you are I
will bring the document to you to look at.

This is a software issue/possible bug in the format that
Dennis Barron is using to print. The printer hardware checks
out fine.

Folks,

This does not seem to be a software problem. With the latest comment, I
would guess there is something wrong in the duplex unit, possibly a worn
roller.

One additional piece of information on this one. I noticed that it only
prints off the page on one side of the paper. The front side seems to have
the problem - both on the burst page and on the output itself. The back
side
seems to be centered properly on the paper.

Dennis,

Lou tells me there is a whole bunch of infomation that didn't make it
into this note. Something about the problem only occuring when you
print a certain way (with enscript?) but not when you print via lpr.

Could you please give the *exact* commands youre using when you print
and it does or does not fail?

Please also make sure you don't have any aliases or environment
variables that might be affecting things.

Also having a copy of any job that you printed that failed would be
useful.

There's no way anyone can even make an attempt at debugging this
without a lot more information.

I wasn't in on the original bug reporting, but I did try to print to
nice a couple days ago. I used xv, which dumps to postscript to lpr,
and it was set to maximum size, landscape, and centered on the page.
Both the header page and the picture itself were about an inch
offcenter along the long dimension of the paper. This was printing to
nice rather than nice2, and it was a single page. I have no trouble
printing with xv to any other printers (including the same job with
the same print settings to teletubbies, though teletubbies is a
different kind of printer).

(I don't still have the printout and header in question, though I'd be
happy to generate more).

I left a copy of a job in your mailbox at W92. Let me know if you
need another one.

The example that I left was printed via lpr.

>Could you please give the *exact* commands youre using when you print

I believe it was:

	  lpr [filename]

It is most annoying with enscript in landscape mode since that prints
closer to the left (bottom) of the paper. Maybe you could print a
file to nice2 and I'll bring it down to you?

When you said that the "burst page" was also rotated, you meant the
Athena header page, right? The one that usually has your username in
big letters, and some sort of graph paper on the rest of the page.

If this is being printed wrong, then the job itself is probably
irrelevant. I think I've seen this problem before, on an HP 5si, a
couple of years ago (one of the bld. 66 cluster ones). If it's what
I'm thinking of, the problem is indeed on the printer.

Anyhow, the first step I would try would be to restore the printer to
factory settings (a cold reset). Please be aware that this will make the
printer forget its appletalk settings. The printer should then use bootp
to get its other configurations back, and you can manually restore the
appletalk stuff later (I don't know about or support appletalk, myself,
but I don't think it's hard).

How to do a cold reset:
  a) Power the printer off.
  b) Find the "on-line" or "go" button (the top leftmost button of the
front panel; it varies from model to model what it's labelled).
  c) Hold down this button while powering the printer back on.
You should see "COLD RESET" on the printer's LCD, at which point you can
release the button, and should wait a minute for the printer to finish
booting up.

Yes, I mean the header page. But it's not rotated - it prints in
landscape as it normally would. It's just shifted to the left, off
the edge of the paper.

Since it's not my printer, and I don't know how to program the
Appletalk settings, I suspect that I shouldn't be doing this! Though
Jonathon suggested the same thing.

If it's printing everything off the side of the page, it'll be just
as useless to the appletalk folks in its current state, as after you
reset it.

If I were there, I'd just cold-reset it, and let someone with a mac deal
with the appletalk when they look for it next. Appletalk isn't fully
supported, nor is it a recommended way to print. It seems foolish to
cripple our debugging efforts on its behalf.

I snmpwalk'd the printer, and looked through the settings it knows about;
I don't see anything that would do this, which doesn't leave much else
we can try to debug this.

Comment [03/08/2001 15:50:39 by boojum]

At Lou's request, I cold reset the printer. My test landscape page worked okay. Brian reset the appletalk stuff, so I think it should all be working okay now.
