I'm not sure exactly what you're doing, but If I select File -> Open Layout
or File -> Load Datafile, and set the path filter to either the data files
in /mit/tecplot_v8.00/distrib/examples/dat or the layouts in
/mit/tecplot_v8.00/distrib/demo/lay, and select one of the examples, it loads
fine for me....
