running doesmu under linux6.2/athena 8.4

i have just had someone install the new linux6.2/athena8.4 on my
desktop. we have gotten it working alright now, except for the comp
and repl that i wrote you about before. but we have found a
workaround for that.
there is now a curious problem running dosemu 1.0.1 on this system, that
was not so on the old version:
when starting dosemu at login to athena it starts using all the settings in
/etc/dosemu.conf
but when starting dosemu from an xterm ('xdos &') once on athena, it
does not recognize the settings in /etc/dosemu.conf
now, when running dosemu from an xterm on a non-athena machine,
but running linux6.2, it does use all the settings from
/etc/dosemu.conf
any suggestions of how to fix this? btw, we are running the newer
dosemu 1.0.1, instead of 0.99.0 which ships with linux6.2, but we had
the same problems with the older version.
this problem did not exist with dosemu 0.98 running under linux
5.2/athena8.2
any advice would be welcome.
