What were you trying to do?
Boot the machine.
What's wrong:
Hostname is sometimes set to "(none)".
What should have happened:
Hostname should be set to the name matching the IP address obtained
via DHCP. In all cases I have tried, this has always been my original
static IP, matching tiny-tetazoo.mit.edu.
Please describe any relevant documentation references:
This does not always occur. If it does, lots of programs in the
startup (handling Xresources and zwgc at least) complain about the
wacky hostname (mostly because it contains parens I
think). Additionally, sendmail no longer delivers mail (generated by
cron) destined for "root" correctly, and forwards it to the relay,
which ends up causing a bounce to postmaster@mit.edu which does not please
them.
For now, I am going to kludge things by running "hostname tiny-tetazoo.mit.edu"
in the startup scripts if it is "(none)" I've not been able to figure out
what the exact issue is; perhaps it is pump, perhaps it is not.
Thanks,
Mike
