What were you trying to do?
Install a newer version of layered athena with AFS support.
What's wrong:
Someone deleted the AFSCLIENT=true line out of the stock rc.conf
This causes syncconf to set /etc/sysconfig/afs to tell afs not to start
What should have happened:
The stock rc.conf should have a "AFSCLIENT=true; export AFSCLIENT"
