   On a newly installed Linux machine (8.3.28), root's shell is still
   /bin/sh.  Which might be justifiable.

No one else commented on thi, so I'm going to ignore it.

   Less justifiable is that, upon doing a root console login, TERM is
   "unknown".

We just fixed this (in 8.4.14, I think.)
