What were you trying to do?
Use one of the text terminals. (/dev/tty1, etc) Accesed using CTRL-ALT-F1
What's wrong:
The terminal type is not set properly by the gettys. The
result is that the system defaults to "dumb" terminal
settings. This makes it difficult to use the terminals: the
key mappings are wrong at the login prompt and the
terminal type must be set manually before programs can be run.
What should have happened:
The gettys should set the terminal type for each console to "linux".
