We discussed this very issue recently at a meeting. At some point we
will hack rpmupdate to downgrade i686 machines to i586/i486/i386 as
necessary. I don't know when it will happen. In the meantime, the
update can only support i686-class machines.
Just for the record, we have included a patch that will support > i686
machines in 8.4.11. If you take this patch release, you should then
be able to take future release that include kernel upgrades.
