nfs error causes system crash ?

the RT i was using crashed after the following sequence of events.
1) a program attempted to dump core after an error.
2) an NFS error was reported in the login window (another process
was running doing ftp file transfers at the time, but reading only)
3) the xterm in which the core-dumping process was running closed
4) the system crashed with a panic error.
