I talked to Thomas and Camilla about this.
I noticed to them that Linux does not display the same
  Rebooting to take new configuration 
message.

So the current theory is that Linux needs to reboot a second time
to make the hostname change occurr for real.

This is consistent with later behavior that day:  When the box
took 8.4.9, and rebooted the new hostname was in place.
