at jhawk's suggestion I removed my .Xdefaults file
upon doing so, it got better. discussion on -c sipb indicates that
xlib always reads .Xdefaults, and that people should put things in
.Xresources
This behaviour seems somewhat buggy to me.
why do I get some of the things in my .Xdefaults file, namely
whatever was causing the termcap problems, but not other things, like
xterm colors and fonts?
If the proper place to put things is in .Xresources, it would be neat
if there there was a default .Xdefaults that said that.
