The problem is that we have disabled the MIDI startup at boot time,
due to a bug in previous releases of IRIX. That startup procedure
is required to initialize the MIDI device on O2, but not on Indy.
Since the bug seems to have been fixed in IRIX 6.5, we will re-enable
the MIDI startup, probably in the Athena 8.4 release scheduled for
this summer.
Note that the synthpanel program apparently does the necessary MIDI
initialization when it starts, so you can work around the problem by
starting and exiting that program.
