linux 8.3.30: crashes on inc'ing large message, message gets removed from the PO server

I helped user froggie in the w20 cluster, after the linux box she was
using had frozen. She had been in the midst of inc'ing mail, had inc'd
four messages, and the machine (athena linux, w20-575-40) had wedged so
hard I needed to remove the power to get it to reboot. Then, she
logged back in and exactly the same thing happened again (I had
interpreted the problem as linux-crashes-randomly, rather than a mail
problem, the first time; I should probably have been more paranoid, and
had her inc -notruncate).

Having decided that linux was too traumatic, I had her login to a sun,
we waited for her mail drop to clear, then tried to inc -notruncate
into /var/tmp/..., and lo, there was no mail on her mail drop. She was
nowhere near quota, but the fifth message was large enough to send her
over quota. Her inbox contained (twice) the first four message,
followed by an empty file.

Bugs: I don't think I've given you enough information to do anything
useful, but I'm assuming this is a linux afsd bug, and maybe we'll find
a way to reproduce it.

Postmaster: It seems like it's bug that the large message got removed
from the PO server (a new style one, PO12) without ever getting
successfully inc'd.
