What were you trying to do?
Use the \tabskip control sequence in TeX.
What's wrong:
\tabskip does not appear the be defined. I created a minimal
tex source file to reproduce it, and this is what tex outputs:
manatee$ tex foo
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.2)
(foo.tex
! Undefined control sequence.
l.1 \tapskip
=1em plus2em minus.5em
Please describe any relevant documentation references:
\tabskip is defined to be in plaintex by the TeXbook, page
237. This behavior is also found in the TeX in newtex and on
the vax_bsd43 Athena port.
