The file server your home directory is on, namely ANDROMACHE.MIT.EDU,
was down for a period of time today; this is very likely the cause of
the error you reported. Athena Server Operations says that this outage
may last a while. More information can be obtained by typing "olc motd"
at the athena% prompt; it currently reads as follows:
The fileserver andromache.mit.edu is experiencing difficulties. Athena
Server Operations is aware of the problem, and working to fix it,
although it may be several more hours before andromache returns to
service.
Any homedirectories stored on this fileserver will be unavailable for
the duration of the outage. If your homedirectory is unavailable,
you'll be give a temporary homedirectory, when you login.
To determine which fileserver your homedirectory is stored on, run
add consult
lookup username
