What's wrong:
Mathematica completely died (bus error)
What should have happened:
Mathematica should have kept running and not lost me 90 minutes of work!

My tickets expired. I got the message:
m2-032-13~> afs: Tokens for user of AFS id 21055 for cell athena.mit.edu have expired
in all my terminal windows pretty much simultaneously with mathematica
closing all its windows and going to the bitbucket in the sky.
