problems with large directories on SGI's?

I was helping a user who came into the SIPB office with quota problems.
She had ~4300 messages in her inbox. On an SGI machine, commands that
needed to stat every file (like "ls -l" or "du .") never returned
within a reasonable period. She logged in on a sun and these commands
came back within 15 seconds (compared to over 5 minutes on an SGI).
Her mail totaled about 28meg.
Are there any known AFS bugs with the SGI dealing with large
directories?
