Just to make sure eveyone is on the same page before I close this bug:

We believe this was due to having the RedHat supplied exmh installed
on the machine. this problem was corrected in 8.3.26.

This will be a problem for anyone who has had an a count for a long
time. I can't remember the exact date, but if your account was
created more than 8 to 10 years ago, your ~/.mh_profile will contain
the line:
Editor: /usr/athena/emacs
To solve the problem, just change the line to:
Editor: emacs
