Hi John,
Thanks for your efforts and suggestions. I've thought about this some too
and have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, yes, there is the potential
to save space; but on the other, it's really just a fairly small fraction of
a steadily increasing Athena quota; I get nervous messing around in user's
home dirs and especially with building fairly complex symlink farms there
(though I know soffice puts quite a few of its own there); it's likely,
as you allude to, that we might not quite figure out what can be R/O and
may need to be fixing things fairly often. It also seems that Star Office is
under fairly rapid development and that we likely will need to figure it out
all over again each time.
All of this could lead to major support headaches and time sinks that
would not be worth the space saved.
Maybe we could tell users how to do it themselves if they want to try,
with appropriate warnings and caveats along the lines of "do it at your
own risk- we think this will work but are not certain".
Or maybe it's best to punt the whole thing. I'd like additional opinions...
