Today, while making a brief excursion into CMU zephyr land, I made
an observation:
It is awfully nice to have mail to your kerberos realm work.
That is, if one's zephyrs show up as
username@ATHENA.MIT.EDU
(as they do if an athena user subscribes in any other zephyr
realm), it would be nice if those people could send email to
username@athena.mit.edu and expect it to be delivered.
Similarly with other services, such as discuss. If one enters a discuss
transaction (even locally around here), one shows up as
username@ATHENA.MIT.EDU
If one tries to reply via email (for discuss clients that support that,
like M-r in emacs discuss), then it tries to send mail to
username@ATHENA.MIT.EDU.
Is there any chance that network would consider moving to an
ATHENA-OUTGOING.MIT.EDU MX record, and then once that was in place,
having the release follow suit to use ATHENA-OUTGOING.MIT.EDU,
and then restoring the past ATHENA.MIT.EDU functionality of merely
forwarding to username@MIT.EDU?
This might result in suboptimal mail paths for pre-8.3 machines,
but it does not seem like that would be a significant impediment.
It would be nice to have this working long term as long as ATHENA.MIT.EDU
is going to be our kerberos realm, and it seems highly unlikely that
will go away.
Thanks!
