What were you trying to do?
use group permissions
What's wrong:
Apparently, if you are in more than 14 groups (confirmed by checking
in moira), when you log in, only 14 get added to the /etc/group file.
This happens to myself and Joe Ferreira in particular.
Unfortunately, if you hare a heavy user of an NFS file server, you
need to use these group permissions. Recently, Joe was added
to a couple of new groups and now two groups he really needs to be a
member of are no longer being added to the groups file (crldata and urban).
There seems to be no pattern to which groups put into the groups file... we
checked various group id's. However, it is very consistent as to which
ones it chooses each time -- that doesn't change.
Also, this happens on all workstations, whether or not they have
any customizations. We've double checked this on public cluster
machines.
What should have happened:
I would assume that all groups someone is in would be added to the
/etc/groups file when they log in...

There is no mention of this "feature" in the man page for group or groups.
