Okay, here's what I did on my ultra 5 to reproduce the hanging bug
we've been seeing without using athena software:
First, I reinstalled the machine. I stopped it from coming up after
the install, booted it single-user, and replaced the command in the
last line of /etc/inittab with a ttymon command ("/usr/lib/saf/ttymon
-g -h -T sun -d /dev/console -l console -m ldterm,ttcompat" but it's
really not important) so I could do a console login without dm ever
running to confuse things. Then I rebooted and logged in as root.
I ran:
m64config -depth 8 -res 1280x1024x60
xinit
<Control-D in xterm, bringing down X>
xinit
<Control-D in xterm, bringing down X>
m64config -depth 24 -res 1152x900x66
xinit
At this point the machine hung (the monitor went into power-saving
mode and the machine stopped pinging).
I'm not sure how much of the first few commands are necessary to
reproduce the bug, but it's not like it's a lot of work.
This was with the current athena 8.2 release, which has patch
105362-18.
