What's wrong:
I noticed this in my syslogs:
Jan 30 00:45:00 Implementor.mit.edu cron[4812]: open_module: stat(/usr/lib/security/pam_unix.so.1) failed: No such file or directory
Jan 30 00:45:00 Implementor.mit.edu cron[4812]: load_modules: can not open module /usr/lib/security/pam_unix.so.1
I have a normal crontab:
Implementor.mit.edu# crontab -l
05 3 * * * /etc/athena/desync; /etc/athena/newsyslog
20 4 * * * /etc/athena/clean_tmp_areas > /dev/null
37 * * * * /etc/athena/desync; /usr/lib/sendmail -q
45 0,12 * * * /etc/athena/desync 39600; . /etc/athena/rc.conf; /etc/athena/gettime -g 60 -s $TIMEHUB > /dev/null
I'm assuming it was reactivating when the cron job tried to run.
What should have happened:
/usr/lib/security maybe should be local
