The shell scripts (yes, they are shell scripts :-<) that create new
directories, because of inadequacies in the update protocol, exit when
an error occurs doing whatever they do. When this happens, they will
not clean up for themselves. That means that the log of what they do
will be left in /tmp (/tmp/nfs ?) on the server being updated. If
someone can log in as root to a server that is having this problem and
see what there is, more useful information can probably be obtained.
When directories are created and stocked with initialization files
normally, all logfiles get erased.
