After a lot of searching, I think Sun patch 106439-02 addresses this
problem, as it fixes:
4091197 sending kill -1 to syslog twice kills syslogd
To our credit, this patch was released all of two weeks ago, although
the 2.5.1 version seems to date back to April.
I will get this patch into 8.2.10, assuming it works.
