Maple Vr3 not working properly?

I tried running Maple Vr3, and was presented with a small blue
window which wouldn't accept keyboard input. My initial
diagnosis is that Maple can't find its X resources, since the
framework of the application seems to be there (some menus, a few
buttons, and a ">" prompt), but the all of the widgets in this
framework are misconfigured.
If a way can be found to fix Maple, I'd be grateful.

[I'm sitting at a Sparc 4, running Athena 8.2. I attempted both
"maple -ver 5r3", and "/mit/maple_v5r3/arch/sun4m_54/bin/maple".
On a Sparc 5 running Athena 8.1, Maple Vr3 still works.
This suggests that the problem is triggered by the fs sysname
changing from sun4x_55 to sun4x_56. I poked around in the Maple
lockers for 5 minutes or so, and saw that it's very tangled in
there. :-) ]
(Yes, I know that Maple Vr5 is availble. Ignoring even the
clunky nature in its user interface, it has enough _bugs_ in its
user interface that I really hope I won't be forced to use it.)
