Greg,

You're right.  I just added the modem locker and typed in the
path as /mit/modem/arch..., not realizing that would give me
the same kermit.  The one you added is better than the existing
kermit, but still doesn't seem as fast as whatever was on their
last year in kermit.new.  Maybe it was just my imagination.

I think you're not running kermit from the path I gave you.  When I
run it, I get:

small-gods% /afs/.athena.mit.edu/system/modem/arch/sun4m_54/bin/kermit
C-Kermit 5A(185) BETA-7, 27 Oct 92, AT&T System V R4
Type ? or HELP for help
