Please disregard the message I sent a few minutes ago. I logged into a new
machine and got the same problem without running any software, but only
looking at files using the initial xterm window.
Another feature that doesn't work is Ctrl-middle mouse key. So I cannot
make the background color of any window black or add a scrollbar.

*What were you trying to do?
Move and raise windows by clicking on the title bar & use the three buttons
adjacent to the menu bar (options, iconify, max size).
*What's wrong:
I am unable to do any of this after starting matlab. Often the problem
doesn't start immediately, although just now it did--when matlab was the
only program running.
This happens almost every time I log in, as I use matlab frequently.
