Literal @cellref now requires backslash at ./xess line 34, within string
Execution of ./xess aborted due to compilation errors.

That is a bug; if you report it it will probably be fixed.
It's because the wrapper script is using "@"'s inside of ""s in a Perl script,
and you are evaluating it with Perl5.

copy /mit/xess/arch/i386_linux2/bin/xess to /tmp, and edit it so the lines
mentioning @cellref mention @{cellref} instead.
