Hi.
A few weeks ago, Tom Yu asked me to go through all my outstanding
bug reports and determine which ones had not been depressed.
I'm afraid that past history is responsible for my somewhat depressing
attitude that bugs are unlikely to be fixed; hopefully this can change.
This review is based on transactions in the bugs discuss meeting
containing the string "jhawk".
Here's the summary:
Never acknowledged or fixed: 34
Answered (but not necessarily fixed): 25
Fixed, but never answered: 13
Alas :-(
Detailed per-bug stuff follows.

bugs [12701]: telnet -safe or -x behaves dangerously
Acknowledged, led to release team discussions, etc., etc. Yay.
bugs [12711]: krb.conf & krb.realms addition request
Fixed by release-engineering after forwarding to them by hand; no
response from bugs.
bugs [12772]: rsaix 7.7f: afs
Bizarre AIX afs permissions problem. Never acknowledged, probably
not worth it.
bugs [12785]: sun4 7.7k: 7.7k release
/opt was a dangling symlink under Solaris. Eventually fixed, but the
bug report was unacknowledged.
bugs [12786]: sun4 7.7k: /opt/sunwits/graphics-sw/xil
Similar to previous, and got fixed in the same batch. Bug unack'd.
bugs [12843]: vax 7.6e: moira
Problem with symlinks in the moira locker. Never acknowledged AFAIK, but
ultimately fixed.
bugs [12956]: sun4 7.7k: /dev/audio{,ctl}
Missing audio devices. Eventually corrected and acknowledged.
bugs [12964]: decmips 7.7g: /usr/athena/bin/man
Acknowledged and explained as fixed.
bugs [12971]: rsaix 7.7f: cygnus gcc & ted
Probably a mis-report (sigh...); acked and eventually fixed.
bugs [12995]: rsaix 7.7f: cat1/telnet.1
Unacknowledged but eventually fixed.
bugs [12996]: rsaix 7.7f: source routing
AIX kernel problem. Still extant AFAIK.
bugs [12997]: sun4 7.7k: truss
Truss didn't work under Solaris 2.3. Not acknowledged, but fixed
by 2.4.

AFS utilities can core dump with weird options. Never acknowledged,
still broken...

Acked and described as hard-to-fix.
bugs [13067]: decmips 7.7h: /srvd/sys /srvd/vmunix
Request for multicast to be included in Ultrix kernels, or users
be allowed to build their own kernels.
Never acknowledged, irrelevent now....
bugs [13070]: sun4 7.7k: syslogd
Acknowledged but the real bug wasn't ever found. Similar to [15093].
bugs [13072]: dns thinks sparc5s are classics
Machtype is broken. Acknowledged but not fixed for a while...

Not sure what the resolution here was. I think some of the bugs
here were answered but some were not.

The KERBEROS instance moira problem. I don't think this report
was ever ack'ed but the bug still exists.

No ackowledgement, turns out to be a faulty bug report.

Not actually my bug report, but a followup to a user's bug report requesting
that lpquota give an explanatory message to explain the lack of print
quotas. My bug message from 20 Feb 1995 was never acknowledged in mail to
bugs, but the problem was eventually fixed in 1996.

SGI install procedures are still not well-documented. Mike acked
this but I don't think they're up to date now (Are they?).

Talk about painful. I think this represents a total breakdown
of the bug system for many reasons. Very disappointed. At least
