If the procedure is renamed in R4, the read works... so it looks like
this is a bug that was fixed in R4. We have the latter for SGI and Sun
only... Linux is coming in a few months. There never will be an R4
for DECstations, and It's virtually certain that they won't go back
and fix R3 bugs for platforms that won't get R4.
