Okay, what's probably going on is this: xdvi is using something called
Display Postscript to display the postscript images, which is a
feature built into the X server on Solaris and Irix. Unfortunately,
at least on Solaris, there are bugs in the display postscript code
which can cause the X server to crash (thus causing the screen to go
white and putting you back at the login prompt).
Unfortunately, from past experiences I think the bug happens
intermittently rather than on a particular postscript image. If you
can reproduce the bug (e.g. if you have a document which always causes
this to happen), then if you can put the dvi files and postscript
files in your Public directory, I can determine if the bug still
exists in Solaris 2.5.1 and report it to Sun if so. The other thing
we can do is configure xdvi not to use Display Postscript, which I'll
check on.
