There are a couple of different things going on here (on SGI's side).
I'm not commenting on the user's resources in question (Greg did
that).

First, SGI turned on scrollbars by default. I don't think I would
consider this a bug.

Second, SGI did this in the wrong way. It specifies that scrollbars
should be turned on more specifically than it has to, and this is
wrong. Additionally, they specify special color resources too
specifically.

I looked into this a couple of months ago when Marc reported it, and
the reason I decided not to fix it (make the resources less specific)
was that SGI did this to _almost all_ of their damn X applications.
Since I knew it was insane to fix all of them, I decided not to fix
any of them and just report the problem to SGI. (It's our general
policy not to "fix" random vendor bugs unless there's a really good
reason. The xterm app-defs in particular may be arguable, though there
haven't been too many complaints about it.)
