Thanks for the reply about the problem on Sparc5's!
I don't think the problem is confined to the .o files. When compiling
and things start getting corrupted, the emacs file(s) becomes corrupted. If
one then saves the file, then the corrupted version is saved to disk. This
is what has happened to me several times when compiling large programs. Thank
goodness for OldFiles, or I would have lost months of work.
