Could someone please look at network help desk ticket #50402. this is related
a problem with authenticated telnet sessions that was introduced in the
original athena 7.7 release and fixed in 7.7L i believe. the problem was
re-introduced in 7.7P (specifically on decs). below is the log from this
ticket #. btw, i'm connecting to alexei.mit.edu, using kclient 1.5 and ncsa
telnet 2.7b4

(#12354) (pasted below).
Basically, the client is having the same problem again. The problem is that
the telnetd on his Athena DEC is timing out his Authenticated login from a
PowerMac. It was working for a while, but then the problem resurfaced. I
let him take a look at the way Jenseits was configured, and he said that,
although the Athena version was the same, he thinks that telnetd seemed
different.
He already talked to the Athena consultants on this one, but they referred him
to DCNS. This log was cancelled in the past - is there someone else he should
be talking to?

okay, the problem seems to be a "race condition" where a few things are
going on at the same time. the mac is trying to connect to the telnetd of
the other machine, at the same time the machine is attempting to check the
tickets. the mac forwards its tickets before the machine is ready to
receive them, so they are dropped. then, when it is actually listening, it
doesn't get them so it complains that there is no authentication being
used.
as far as i know, no one in DCNS is working on this because they can't
reliably test it. not to mention that this problem doesn't happen on the
dialups because they are slow. one user mentioned that a solution is to
keep mosaic running on the host machine, to slow it down. another said that
you could try to "nice" the inetd, though that might cause more problems
that it would solve.
I've been using 2.7b1 with few problems. I'm not sure what changes were
made that "fixed" it.

yup, but i'm using 2.0d2 with Kerberos Telnet plugin 1.1

i've been using 2.7b1 and it works. 2.6.1d1 is the last version i know of
that works. 2.7b2 has a bug where it will always expire your tickets. i
wouldn't suggest using it.

i connect to alexei, a private dec 5000. do you ever have problems with the
dialups?
