You've probably already noticed, but...
It often happens that emacs doesn't update the mode-line after
a C-X C-S until the next character following. This is occasionally
disconcerting, though hitting backarrow can always reconfirm that the
buffer is current (since the mode-line then updates itself to
"----- Emacs ...").
