What's wrong:

I must say this is the strangest bug I've encountered in a very, very
long time. Watch this:

w20-575-52% attach ereidell
ereidell: NFS mounted APOLLO.MIT.EDU:/mit/lockers/ereidell on /mit/ereidell (read-write)
w20-575-52% attach erspert
erspert: Already attached...mapping
w20-575-52% ls /mit/erspert
/mit/erspert not found
w20-575-52% detach erspert
ereidell: detached
w20-575-52% detach ereidell
ereidell: Not attached
w20-575-52% hes erspert filsys
NFS /mit/lockers/erspert zeus w /mit/erspert
w20-575-52% hes ereidell filsys
NFS /mit/lockers/ereidell apollo w /mit/ereidell

So, you attach ereidell, and then "attach erspert" thinks that
ereidell is already attached. You detach erspert, and ereidell gets
detached instead. If you attach erspert first and then ereidell, they
both attach fine, and erspert gets detached when you detach erspert,
just like it should.

The only similarity we could see between ereidell and erspert is the
same first two letters of the username, so we tried it with jik and
jis, and it didn't work. Also, why would erspert affect ereidell, but
not vice versa?

What should have happened:

Who knows?! :-)

I would very much like to be kept up-to-date on when this bug is found
and fixed, and I'm sure Ellen Spertus would as well :-).
