This is actually a conflict in filesystems and mount points.
There are two filesystems which can be mounted on /mit/autocad.
One is named autocad, the other is autocad_r12.
some workarounds:
1. detach autocad, then run the dash entry
2. detach autocad, attach or add autocad_r12, then run the dash entry
i.e. if nothing is attached or autocad_r12 is attached
athena% attach autocad_r12
attach: /afs/athena.mit.edu/software/autocad_r12 linked to /mit/autocad for filesystem autocad_r12
athena% attach autocad
autocad: Filesystem autocad_r12 is already mounted on /mit/autocad
athena% attach autocad_r12
attach: Filesystem "autocad_r12" is already attached (authenticating)
athena%
then go to Text/Graphics ->CAD->AutoCAD 12 and run it, everything works.
only when autocad (NOT autocad_r12) is attached do you get the symptoms
you describe.
athena% detach autocad
detach: Filesystem "autocad" is not attached
athena% detach autocad_r12
detach: autocad_r12 detached
athena% attach autocad
attach: /afs/athena.mit.edu/software/autocad_r12 linked to /mit/autocad for filesystem autocad
then go to Text/Graphics->CAD->AutoCAD 12 and run
Dash popup -- Could not attach autocad_r12 Attach failed with error 27

athena% attach autocad_r12
autocad_r12: Filesystem autocad is already mounted on /mit/autocad
