using `add' with maple on one line

On decs (at least), there seems to be some trouble starting up maple
from the athena% prompt in one line, i.e.:
add maple; maple &
If one clicks on a button in maple before the maple > prompt appears,
then the following message appears in the xterm:
/mit/maple/decmipsbin/maple.X: 1839 Memory fault
[1] Done ( set add_opts = ( maple ); source $initdir/add; maple )
However, it seems to work fine if you start up maple as follows:
add maple
maple &
