What's wrong:
w lists users that have been logged in for longer than the machine has
been up. The users that it list are not actually logged in. The
problem is not actually with w. The phantom users are still in utmp.
This is a common problem on athena machines.
What should have happened:
The computer should not think people are logged in when they're not.

hm, maybe there's some man pages that address this.
