I still cannot really log into suns (both kinds). Review:
	The X server dies randomly
Usually it dies on login but not always. It will still randomly die
if I succeed in completely logging in. session_gate is still running
afterwards.
Today I logged in without customizations (which usually works
OK). When it died this time, I was only running zwgc, two xterms,
emacs 19 (this happens when I run emacs 18 too), and vtwm.gamma
(which was previously considered a possibile cause for my troubles).

More, related to this:
In order to work around this problem I have attempted to log in on
console, then start X from there. This just won't work. First,
running 'startx' (or xinit) informs me:
/dev/fb: Permission denied
/dev/fb is a link to somewhere which has the permissions crw-------. Upon
su'ing to root, running xinit has the following behavior:
wait a while
print:	Bus Error
	(core dumped)
immeidately after which, X starts, with this background that says
"Welcome to openwindows". The mouse moves but no xterm ever comes.

Are the permissions on /dev/fb correct? I know that once upon a time
I could log in on console and start X myself, and I didn't even have
to be root.

I also discovered, on a related exploration, that you can hang the
boot prompt quite thoroughly by running 'probe-scsi'.
