System name: pickled-herring.MIT.EDU
Type and version: POWER 7.7F
Display type: POWER_Gt1
What were you trying to do?
Run some software that I got off the net, reather than compiling it
myself.
What went wrong?
Well, I don't like having to do that, but I can't figure out how to
make the Motif libraries on this platform do what I want, so I was
willing to try it. It doesn't help:
; file nedit_ibm
nedit_ibm: executable (RISC System/6000 V3.1) or object module not stripped
; ./nedit_ibm
Could not load program ./nedit_ibm
Symbol _XmStrings in tcsh is undefined
Symbol XmRepTypeInstallTearOffModelConverter in tcsh is undefined
Symbol XmTextDisableRedisplay in tcsh is undefined
Symbol XmTextEnableRedisplay in tcsh is undefined
Symbol XmTextGetSubstring in tcsh is undefined
Error was: Exec format error
I get this same kind of error for several different binaries from
several different places, but I can't see the difference between
that and this:
; file /afs/athena.mit.edu/system/help/rsaixbin/olh_motif
/afs/athena.mit.edu/system/help/rsaixbin/olh_motif: executable (RISC System/6000 V3.1) or object module
or even this:
; file /bin/date
/bin/date: executable (RISC System/6000 V3.1) or object module
What should have happened?
I should be able to compile and run a binary using Motif 1.2.x
(prefereably x >= 3, but I'm not picky right now) on Athena
RS/6000's. I should be able to run binaries compiled somewhere else
under that type of environment here on Athena RS/6000's. I believe
that I must simply be missing some piece of information, but I have
no further idea what it might be or where I might find it.
Anything else you'd like to add?
Yeah, after searching through the InfoExploder for about an hour, I
ran across several visual bugs and one piece of information that
looked like it might be helpful. I can find no better way to
reference this than to say that it had item number: Q608665 (the
search window does not seem to have a `paste' method, so you'll have
to type it in, FYI). If this doesn't work for you, let me know and
I'll find it again.
