Sorry to have taken so long to reply.
I don't check in with our bug list often enough.
The reason why you could not find the raster files, is that at MIT, we
install only a subset of andrew in /usr/andrew.
The files you seek are in the andrew locker.
attach andrew
then look in
/mit/andrew/6/common/lib/rasters.
I apologize for this obscure and undocumented placement of the files.
When we elected to support only a subset of Andrew, we elected not to
change all the documentation to change all the references to name
/mit/andrew/version_number/{common,hosttype}.
I think the problem you are experincing with the .ras files is this:
There is an OLD format .ras which is NOT the same as .raster.
Go to the Raster I/O menu card and try the "Read Old Raster" command.
