System name: lees3
Type and version: SPARC/Classic 7.7I (1 update(s) to same version)
Display type: cgthree
What were you trying to do?
Configure the rs232 port(s) on the sun for logins (eventually
to connect to digital phone/modem).
What's wrong:
I have created a cable as specified by the sun documents that
came with the workstation. I have a Y cable that will provide
access to ports a and b.
I have added the following entry in /etc/inittab to start up sac:
sc:234:respawn:/usr/lib/saf/sac -t 300
I have configured ttymon with the following file (/etc/saf/zsmon/_pmtab)
# VERSION=1
ttyb:u:root:reserved:reserved:reserved:/dev/term/b:::/usr/bin/login::9600:ldterm,ttcompat:lees3 (ttyb) login\: :Terminal Disabled:vt100:y:#
ttya:u:root:reserved:reserved:reserved:/dev/term/a:::/usr/bin/login::9600:ldterm,ttcompat:lees3 (ttya) login\: :Terminal Disabled:vt100:y:#
I CAN log into both ttya and ttyb. The problem is (aparently) with the
utmp and utmpx files and the login program.
If you log in one one line (either), and then type 'finger', an entry
for your login session is created. One for .zsmon is also created! When
you log out, the entry for .zsmon is removed, but not the entry for the
user. The same data is observed with the 'who' and 'users' programs.
The user is correctly logged out otherwise. The system however, believes
that someone is still logged in and does not reactivate.
during login session:
karen Karen E. Walrath term/ Fri 23:43 10-025 LEES x3141 or x5019
.zsmon ???
after login session terminated (turds):
karen Karen E. Walrath term/ Fri 23:43 10-025 LEES x3141 or x5019
If you log in on two terminal lines, the first login behaves as above.
The second login causes another .zsmon to appear, and the original entry
for the user is overwritten with the new one.
during 1st login session:
karen Karen E. Walrath term/ Fri 23:43 10-025 LEES x3141 or x5019
.zsmon ???
during 2nd login session:
.zsmon ???
karen Karen E. Walrath term/ Fri 23:45 10-025 LEES x3141 or x5019
.zsmon ???
after 2nd login session terminates:
.zsmon ???
.zsmon ???
after both login sessions terminate (turds):
.zsmon ???
To check that the problem was not partly caused by too long of a dev file
name, I shortened the dev file to /dev/trm/a (comparable to /dev/pts/0). This
changed nothing from above other than trm/a and trm/b fit into the field for
terminal.
I think something is getting confused about just who is logging in and out.

Another related problem: You log in to a sun. You log out of the sun.
(either on the display or remotely). I'll use motor.mit.edu as an example.
I finger @motor. No one is logged in. (It has definitely reactivated
recently.)
I finger karen@motor. I get the following:
[motor.MIT.EDU]
Login Name TTY Idle When Where
karen Karen Walrath pts/0 13d Fri 13:52
(At least these turds don't show up in the user list.)
Thanks for looking at this.
Karen
