What were you trying to do?
see what the idle time of someone logged on an RS/6k was.

xterm does not modify utmp. not at all. aixterm does it. xterm
doesn't.
What should have happened:
well, I should have an entry for each xterm. Is that asking
too much?
Please describe any relevant documentation references:
man xterm mentions an option for
utmpInhibit (class UtmpInhibit)
Specifies whether or not xterm should try to record
the user's terminal in /etc/utmp.
but I don't have this set.
perhaps explicitly unsetting this? let me check. Nope.
